“In the Zone”
CrossFit advocates the Zone diet – which works well for us. However, this entry is about the Town of Glastonbury Zoning…
Today, people from the Town of Glastonbury Zoning visited us (these guys were very professional, and did their job well). It appears somebody in town was concerned about CrossFit Persevere, and launched a complaint. We’ve made some changes to the site as recommended by our discussion with town planning and zoning. We don’t know who complained, but I found it particularly interesting there were complaints about traffic and parking – and CrossFit Persevere has had exactly ZERO customers (who drive exactly ZERO cars). It’s a shame some “angry resident with concerns” couldn’t pick up the phone, and call me… (I don’t believe it has anything to do with parking). Either way – I want to be clear on this – we intend to abide by the law.
Here’s the bigger shame. Kim decided to start CrossFit Persevere because she believes she can help people achieve a higher level of fitness, live healthier, and do more with the brief time all of us have here on earth. The world (and this town) are full of out of shape people, who’ve tried and failed different diet and exercise programs which haven’t worked. So, about 14 months after breast cancer, Kim’s changed her diet and exercise approach, she’s fitter and stronger than ever, and she decided to take that experience and do something positive, help, and maybe inspire a few people. It’s a GREAT story – and I’m really close to it, and I’m very proud of her, and she (and CrossFit Persevere) have my full support. The shame of it – some “concerned citizen” with an axe to grind couldn’t pick up the phone and ask us what we’re trying to do in our garage?
There aren’t enough people in the world who take a bad situation, and make it good. Our country is teetering on the edge of obesity, the American diet is horrible, and cancer (and other diseases) are on the rise. CrossFit Persevere represents a paradigm change in fitness, and health. It’s not for everyone, but it was created for a good purpose; the concepts are based on truth, and the entity will go forward. Doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results is not a path to change….and many fitness systems, and diet systems have people doing just that. While maybe we only impact a few people’s lives – it will be in a positive way – if that means restoring someone’s ability to play ball with their kids, or increase their performance to compete, or generate a sense of empowerment over their body – it’s for the better.
The “Persevere” in our name is no coincidence. While I’m not sure where CrossFit Persevere will ultimately go, I am sure we will persevere.

It is a real shame that some coward complained to the town before speaking to you personally. I am certain this has only stengthened your resolve to get up and running (all legal like).

Well said, Russ. It really is a shame to see petty behavior like this. I think you and Kim handled it very well, and will continue to do so.
As to whomever it is that filed the complaint: karma is a funny thing. Make sure you look both ways before you cross the street.
